Wednesday Night is Bergen County's Hot Night Out at Sear House

About six months ago, one of my friends in-the-know told me that the owner of Dimora, Gino Gjevukaj, in Closter was going to open a super-chic new steakhouse called Sear House at the former location of the Peking Duck House, right down the road from, and practically in the same town as, Dimora.  Knowing that Bergen County hasn’t been too kind to steak houses in recent years, I thought to myself, "Wow, that's a pretty bold move."  And isn't it?  I mean, yes, Mr. Gjevukaj has an obviously successful Italian restaurant already (I think his family also owns another in Westchester County, NY), but to open up a new restaurant literally right in your own backyard?  Wouldn't you be competing for the customers that you have already won?  So, to make a long story short, it didn't make that much sense to me...

That was until two Wednesday's ago, when I finally had the chance to visit this new Bergen County hot spot.  First, let me start by telling you this place is beautiful.  I visited at night, and walking up to the double glass doors, you are met with more glass.  In fact, the whole feel is super lux contemporary.  Dark, highly-finished woods, funky textured walls, multiple and elegantly different seating areas to fit my multiple personalities, and a New York-boutique-hotel style lounge complete with a fireplace that continuously rolls sexy currents of fire up a glass chimney.   For Bergen County, this place is hot!

When we arrived, I was informed by sharply suited gentleman named Kenny (who I later learned was Gino’s brother and business partner) that Wednesday night was, in fact, Martini night and that the first one was on the house.  Did someone say free booze? What great news! Count me in!  We immediately worked our way over to the bar, took our seats and ordered our free drinks.  Three important notes here: 

1. The bar top is hollowed out white marble (or quartz?); it is lit from the inside and it is absolutely beautiful, eerie and cool.  According to the bartender, it can change be illuminated by up to 9 different colors.
2. The drinks were generous and well-crafted.
3. The people hanging out in the lounge/bar area were lively and attractive. 

Before we got ready to sit down for dinner, I was delighted by another surprise:  The music.  On Wednesday nights, vocalist/DJ Josh Baty transforms Sear House into one the hippest, swankiest night clubs outside of New York City.  I have seen Josh before; he is an amazing performer and I have reported in the past that his duo, Josh & Liza, absolutely deliver some of the best live music in Bergen County.  When we first arrived, and throughout dinner, Josh was singing music by Sinatra, Michael Buble, Elton John, Gavin Degraw, Maroon 5, etc and he did so effortlessly.  Josh was so good that the people sitting at the table near us thought that they were listening to the radio.   I would have been fine with that.  The food was good.  The drink was free.  Night out was a success in my book; and then around 9:30, the mood changed completely.

We were sitting in the main dining room when we heard the thumping of dance music, and then the squealing of women – apparently having a great time.  Of course we had to check it out.  When we turned the corner to follow the sounds back towards the bar, we were floored at the sight.  Are we in Bergen County?  Is this really Closter?  Is it really Wednesday night?  On the undersized, improvised dance floor there was a respectable knot of men and women DANCING their asses off!  Yes, I said dancing!  I could not believe my eyes.  I thought the night was winding down; I was wrong – it was just warming up.

For the next two hours, we danced to Usher, LMFAO, Pitbull and Lady Gaga.  We had a few more drinks, we made some new friends and we promised to tell everyone we knew how cool Sear House is.  So my advice to you:  If you can get the hall pass on a Wednesday night, get over to Sear House at 441 Piermont Road in Closter, NJ.  I want this steak house to stay around for a while.  This was the most fun night out I have had in while.  To Mr. Gino, Mr. Kenny and Mr. Josh – keep up the good work!  We’ll be back.


Update 1/7/2011: Since writing this, Sear House was reviewed in the Bergen Record and was given three stars!  Nice work guys.  (See everyone - I told you so.)  You can read the article here.

Where Do You Like to Listen to Live Music in Bergen County?

I am interested to know where most people think that the best free live music is in Bergen County.  I have written about particular live music acts and live music venues in my blog posts before and I strongly feel that when I find a good place to see live music in NJ, I'm confident that most people will feel the same way.

However, lately my friends and I have been disagreeing about the best live acts around and the best live music venues in Bergen County.  So I have promised them that I would add post requesting information from anyone who would like to voice their opinion on the matter.

If I receive enough responses, my goal is to post the results of all of the submissions in a "Best Live Music in Bergen County" list.  So please don't be shy about adding your submissions.  If you want to send in more than one, that's fine; but please tell list them in the order of which you like the best! 

So, just to be clear, I am looking for the answers to the following two questions:

1. Who is your favorite live music act and why?

2. Where is your favorite place to see live music entertainment and why?

Still One of Our Favorite Steak Joints!

Whenever I have $35.95 burning a hole in my pocket, I still itch to blow it on a 14oz Prime New York Shell Steak at The River Palm Terrace in Edgewater, NJ.  You can have their Mahwah and Fair Lawn locations, they do nothing for me.  I don't know why.  I guess it's the original Edgewater location's ambience, energy and clientel that creates the real charm for me.  I have not set foot in this restaurant in the past ten years and found it empty.  It attracts all walks of life; all with one common goal: A GREAT STEAK.  There is no grilling here that I know of; to my knowledge all of The River Palm Terrace's magic happens under a gas broiler.  What it produces is some of the best NY Strips, Filet Mignon and T-Bone steaks that I have ever had. How do they do it exactly?  I have really have no idea; I imagine they keep it simple - salt, pepper, the right amount of heat and some love..,  but frankly, I could care less how they do it.  It's just perfect every time.

This is a true, old-school Bergen County hot spot.  You know from the minute that your bread basket hits the table that you are in the hands of very capable and professional waiters.  These guys have been around for a while and they know exactly what they are doing.  They know the drill.  If you're undecided, don't be shy - speak up.  They will undoubtedly point you in the right direction.  This is great place to a special date or bring a hungry group of meat-eating buddies.  If they have never been here, they will praise you for your good suggestion.  Trust me.  If you are looking for a great steak in Bergen County tonight, you can't go wrong at The River Palm Terrace. 

Thin Ones Need Love Too

I'm talking about pizza, of course.  So I know it's a little off topic, but I'm constantly split between which pizza I like the most in Bergen County. And let's face it, going out for a slice or two in Bergen County tonight is probably on more people's agendas than going out for dinner and dancing.  So I'd love to hear some additional thoughts on the matter.

Here are my favorites (currently, that is):

A Mano in Ridgewood - 24 Franklin Avenue - www.amanopizza.com

Why I love it:  It's a pretty modern joint for a pizza place, always a good crowd in the evenings, and when it comes to producing a good pie, they just get it.  The pizza is baked in a coal oven.  The crust is crunchy on the outside (sometimes even a little burnt) and moist and chewy on the inside.  I like to keep the toppings simple here; less is more.

Kinchley's Tavern in Ramsey - 586 N Franklin Turnpike

Why I love it: The pizza is super thin and the crust has a great flavor.  I always ask for it a little well done because I like it crunchy.  The drinks and ice cream deserts are HUGE.  The entire place is nostalgia galore with all kinds of kitsch, old model trains, beer steins, etc taking up all the usable space.  Speaking of usable space: you can barely fit another table in the place so be prepared to be sitting shoulder to shoulder with your neighbors.

Brooklyn's Brick-Oven in Hackensack - 161 Hackensack Avenue

Why I love it: Awesome pizza. There is no ambience to speak of, the location is not the greatest, and there isn't another thing on the menu that I feel is worth trying.  It's all about the pie.  Don't pick it up for take-out because it is not as good when you get it home.  Eat it right out of the oven while it's still piping hot and crispy.  Oh yeah, and don't make the mistake of trying to pay with credit card - it's cash only.

Roxanne's in Mahwah - 150 Franklin Turnpike

Why I love it:  This is a great little place.  They have outdoor seating in the warmer months, the crowd is usually plentiful and lively, and the service is great.  I don't know if they ever do it, but they should definitely hire some outside entertainment on those warm summer nights.  The pizza is of the thin crust variety and it is always great.

Don't Miss Waterside this Weekend

Have you been to Waterside in North Bergen, NJ.  (Okay, I realize it's in Hudson County; but this is really a North Jersey blog - I just liked the name Berge County Tonight.) Anyway, it used to be called Frank's Waterside (I think because Sen. Frank Lautenberg used to be a partner in the restaurant with the previous owners - but don't quote me on that.)  The new Waterside has experienced a little facelift, a new menu and new owners; and because of this a new crowd has started nesting there.  You can expect a good mix of ages, but this crowd definitely has a hip/trendy feel to it. 

Earlier this year The Record gave Waterside a Three Star excellent rating in it's April 9, 2010 review.  We at Bergen County Tonight would considering pushing it to Four Stars.  Here's what you can expect to find when you visit:  it's huge place with a tiered dining room and a magnificent view overlooking the Hudson River into New York.  The food is with-out-a-doubt better than average for the area.  Depending on the season, they have a large outdoor seating area sometimes complete with a DJ.  On the weekends, you'll probably find lots of pretty people eating, laughing and enjoying some of the music.

I do believe that Waterside would benefit from the kind of entertainment that vocalists Josh & Liza offer at Sanzari's New Bridge Inn, but what we heard there was fine and will appeal to many people.

Ladies, if you decide to go this weekend, bring a wrap if you want to check out the outside patio.  It gets cold and windy near the water and there's always a good-looking guy (or two) out there smoking a cigarette or drinking a Scotch.

Two Top Choices Tonight...

For those of you that up for something a little wild...  I heard that the past few Fridays at Dragonfly in Carlstadt have been filled with craziness.  Tonight the music will be hosted by DJ Richie Rydell.  Dragonfly is a big indoor/outdoor bar and lounge.  To give you an idea of what the scene is like - they recently had the Naked Cowboy from Time Square host Bikini Bull Riding night complete with loud music and a mechanical bull.  They used to have the bull every Wednesday night...  the rumor is, it's making a comeback.  A word to the wise: This is a younger crowd.  Old folks - you've been warned.

Tonight is also a good night for Sanzari's New Bridge Inn in New Milford.  (Hint, hint: this has been a secret Bergen County hot spot for the North Jersey elite this past summer and my guess is that they are just getting started.)  This place is really for young and old, but leaning to the more sophisticated side.  According to my sources, the crowd has been getting better, better every weekend.  The reason: Great, reasonably priced Italian food and fantastic live music by Josh and Liza from A-List Entertainment Co.  They are über-talented vocalists that light up the place with the perfect music choices that span from Sinatra's era to today's hits.  According to the hostess at Sanzari's, Josh and Liza play almost every Friday and Saturday.  Trust me: If you haven't heard these guys yet, you do not know what your missing.  This is not your run-of-the-mill live restaurant entertainment.  This is infinitely more special.  PS - Call ahead and ask to be seated on the bar side of the restaurant.

What's going on in Bergen County Tonight?
