Sanducci's Moves and Jersey Boys Grooves

$Account.OrganizationNameTony and Lisa DiMiglio's highly rated Italian trattoria Sanducci's has finally moved (about 500 feet north) to 620 Kinderkamack Road in Rivervale, NJ.  I've always been a fan of DiMiglio's Sanducci's (it had a couple previous owners) even when it was in the old building, but I think that Lisa and Tony did a great job of breathing new life into the place when they moved into their new location.  The food is still fantastic and the service is always warm and welcoming; which are probably the main reasons that Sanducci's was recently chosen by The Record Readers into their Top5 in Bergen County and why they were also selected as the winner of The Best Italian Restaurant by Bergen Health & Life Magazine.  Since Sanducci's is a BYO, I'll usually stop by Total Wine just 2 minutes away on the same street at 135 Kinderkamack Road in River Edge. Total Wine is huge, so make sure you give yourself enough time to navigate the selection.  As if our delight for the new restaurant wasn't enough, we learned of some very exciting news the night that we visited:  We were informed that Josh Baty is now performing on Wednesday nights at Jersey Boys Grill, their newest eatery in New Milford, NJ.
 Jersey Boys Grill
The DiMiglio's opened Jersey Boys Grill about two years ago in a completely renovated corner building at 704 River Road in New Milford.  I have visited this new (sub)urban eatery a few times since their opening.  A fine blend of style and substance, this large, modern-meets-warehouse space is accented with a dark woods, earthy brick and stone, black box industrial ceiling and street lamp glow lighting. But this is no high ticket Bergen County restaurant: The food and atmosphere is immersed in comfort, affordability and fun; it is not overpowering, pretentious or conceited in any way. The long sweeping bar into tall, floor-to-ceiling windows, the high-top cocktail tables and the fireplace-adjoined low seating booths add to the deliciously mellow vibe of  bar/lounge space.  The bar area is separated from expansive open area dining room which is usually bustling with conversation and energy. The menu is standard American comfort fare, highlighted by thin crust pizzas from their wood burning oven and huge nacho platters that are big enough to sleep on.  Over the years, the DiMiglio's have attempted to entertain their guests at Jersey Boys Grill by providing live music events such as bands or DJs.  The unfortunate problem that this has presented is that a live band or DJ in an open floor plan industrial space is usually extremely loud and therefore, extremely polarizing to the guests.  The young ones tend to like it, but the older ones feel like their ears are going to bleed.

www.jerseyboysgrill.comI am looking forward to the addition of Josh Baty on Wednesday nights for two reasons: For one, he doesn't need to be overpowering to be effective.  He is accustom to playing in higher-end restaurants where producing the perfect volume for a comfortable evening dinner is a big concern.  But make no mistake, Josh is also capable of getting loud when it is appropriate.  There is no doubt in my mind that Jersey Boys will experience some of the best Springsteen anthems ever written once the dinner crowd has transformed into a mostly bar crowd.  The second reason that I am anticipating Josh's début at Jersey Boys is because of his mastery of all things Pop.  Josh has an almost Danny Gans-like capability to sound exactly like the artists whose songs he is performing.  As I have mentioned in earlier posts, Josh is truly a human jukebox.  He will perform music that spans from Bobby Darin to Kings of Leon and make it sound like it belongs in the same set.  While I am sure that Josh will be more free with his renditions of top 40 rock & roll music from the past 60 years at Jersey Boys, he will no doubt still cater to the Buble/Sinatra crowd that has religiously following him for the past few years.  All we can hope for now is that his wildly talented wife Liza will join him every once in awhile to round out the night with her own take on the top hits of all of the female artists that we love so dearly.

My only request for Jersey Boys Grill; please save me a seat at the bar this Wednesday night!

Still One of Our Favorite Steak Joints!

Whenever I have $35.95 burning a hole in my pocket, I still itch to blow it on a 14oz Prime New York Shell Steak at The River Palm Terrace in Edgewater, NJ.  You can have their Mahwah and Fair Lawn locations, they do nothing for me.  I don't know why.  I guess it's the original Edgewater location's ambience, energy and clientel that creates the real charm for me.  I have not set foot in this restaurant in the past ten years and found it empty.  It attracts all walks of life; all with one common goal: A GREAT STEAK.  There is no grilling here that I know of; to my knowledge all of The River Palm Terrace's magic happens under a gas broiler.  What it produces is some of the best NY Strips, Filet Mignon and T-Bone steaks that I have ever had. How do they do it exactly?  I have really have no idea; I imagine they keep it simple - salt, pepper, the right amount of heat and some love..,  but frankly, I could care less how they do it.  It's just perfect every time.

This is a true, old-school Bergen County hot spot.  You know from the minute that your bread basket hits the table that you are in the hands of very capable and professional waiters.  These guys have been around for a while and they know exactly what they are doing.  They know the drill.  If you're undecided, don't be shy - speak up.  They will undoubtedly point you in the right direction.  This is great place to a special date or bring a hungry group of meat-eating buddies.  If they have never been here, they will praise you for your good suggestion.  Trust me.  If you are looking for a great steak in Bergen County tonight, you can't go wrong at The River Palm Terrace

Thin Ones Need Love Too

I'm talking about pizza, of course.  So I know it's a little off topic, but I'm constantly split between which pizza I like the most in Bergen County. And let's face it, going out for a slice or two in Bergen County tonight is probably on more people's agendas than going out for dinner and dancing.  So I'd love to hear some additional thoughts on the matter.

Here are my favorites (currently, that is):

A Mano in Ridgewood - 24 Franklin Avenue - www.amanopizza.com

Why I love it:  It's a pretty modern joint for a pizza place, always a good crowd in the evenings, and when it comes to producing a good pie, they just get it.  The pizza is baked in a coal oven.  The crust is crunchy on the outside (sometimes even a little burnt) and moist and chewy on the inside.  I like to keep the toppings simple here; less is more.

Kinchley's Tavern in Ramsey - 586 N Franklin Turnpike

Why I love it: The pizza is super thin and the crust has a great flavor.  I always ask for it a little well done because I like it crunchy.  The drinks and ice cream deserts are HUGE.  The entire place is nostalgia galore with all kinds of kitsch, old model trains, beer steins, etc taking up all the usable space.  Speaking of usable space: you can barely fit another table in the place so be prepared to be sitting shoulder to shoulder with your neighbors.

Brooklyn's Brick-Oven in Hackensack - 161 Hackensack Avenue

Why I love it: Awesome pizza. There is no ambience to speak of, the location is not the greatest, and there isn't another thing on the menu that I feel is worth trying.  It's all about the pie.  Don't pick it up for take-out because it is not as good when you get it home.  Eat it right out of the oven while it's still piping hot and crispy.  Oh yeah, and don't make the mistake of trying to pay with credit card - it's cash only.

Roxanne's in Mahwah - 150 Franklin Turnpike

Why I love it:  This is a great little place.  They have outdoor seating in the warmer months, the crowd is usually plentiful and lively, and the service is great.  I don't know if they ever do it, but they should definitely hire some outside entertainment on those warm summer nights.  The pizza is of the thin crust variety and it is always great.

Please let me know if you have any favorites that I need to try.

Don't Miss Waterside this Weekend

Have you been to Waterside in North Bergen, NJ.  (Okay, I realize it's in Hudson County; but this is really a North Jersey blog - I just liked the name Berge County Tonight.) Anyway, it used to be called Frank's Waterside (I think because Sen. Frank Lautenberg used to be a partner in the restaurant with the previous owners - but don't quote me on that.)  The new Waterside has experienced a little facelift, a new menu and new owners; and because of this a new crowd has started nesting there.  You can expect a good mix of ages, but this crowd definitely has a hip/trendy feel to it.

Earlier this year The Record gave Waterside a Three Star excellent rating in it's April 9, 2010 review.  We at Bergen County Tonight would considering pushing it to Four Stars.  Here's what you can expect to find when you visit:  it's huge place with a tiered dining room and a magnificent view overlooking the Hudson River into New York.  The food is with-out-a-doubt better than average for the area.  Depending on the season, they have a large outdoor seating area sometimes complete with a DJ.  On the weekends, you'll probably find lots of pretty people eating, laughing and enjoying some of the music.

I do believe that Waterside would benefit from the kind of entertainment that vocalists Josh & Liza offer at Sanzari's New Bridge Inn, but what we heard there was fine and will appeal to many people.
Ladies, if you decide to go this weekend, bring a wrap if you want to check out the outside patio.  It gets cold and windy near the water and there's always a good-looking guy (or two) out there smoking a cigarette or drinking a Scotch.

If Tiger Woods is Still In Town...

If Tiger Woods is still in town, he should take my advice to soothe the pain of the triple-bogey from today's performance at The Barclays.  My recommendation for plans tonight in Bergen County is inspired by the beautiful day we had today and the promise of fair, almost fall-like, weather that is predicted for tonight.  If you have never been, you must visit Nisi Estiatorio in Englewood.  Easy to get to, valet parking, and some of the best Greek food around.  Let me also say that this is NOT your typical Greek restaurant: it's classy, sophisticated and food is not your average Greek fare.  These guys do it right.  You should expect a good crowd tonight.  An important note:  Even though I like to recommend places with live music (or some kind of entertainment), this place is different.  The environment and the food are the stars here.  Hey, I know it's no trophy Tiger, but it's still ultra cool and pretty fantastic.
PS - If you took my advice about Sanzari's last night, you made the right move... I heard the place was jammin'.  Josh and Liza apparently lit it up as usual.  I might have to stop by there myself tonight.  (Now there's a plan: Nisi Estiatorio for dinner and Sanzari's for the entertainment and a night cap!)

Two Top Choices Tonight...

For those of you that up for something a little wild...  I heard that the past few Fridays at Dragonfly in Carlstadt have been filled with craziness.  Tonight the music will be hosted by DJ Richie Rydell.  Dragonfly is a big indoor/outdoor bar and lounge.  To give you an idea of what the scene is like - they recently had the Naked Cowboy from Time Square host Bikini Bull Riding night complete with loud music and a mechanical bull.  They used to have the bull every Wednesday night...  the rumor is, it's making a comeback.  A word to the wise: This is a younger crowd.  Old folks - you've been warned.

Tonight is also a good night for Sanzari's New Bridge Inn in New Milford.  (Hint, hint: this has been a secret Bergen County hot spot for the North Jersey elite this past summer and my guess is that they are just getting started.)  This place is really for young and old, but leaning to the more sophisticated side.  According to my sources, the crowd has been getting better, better every weekend.  The reason: Great, reasonably priced Italian food and fantastic live music by Josh and Liza from A-List Entertainment Co.  They are über-talented vocalists that light up the place with the perfect music choices that span from Sinatra's era to today's hits.  According to the hostess at Sanzari's, Josh and Liza play almost every Friday and Saturday.  Trust me: If you haven't heard these guys yet, you do not know what your missing.  This is not your run-of-the-mill live restaurant entertainment.  This is infinitely more special.  PS - Call ahead and ask to be seated on the bar side of the restaurant.

What's going on in Bergen County Tonight?
